How To Study At Home

Updated: Aug 11, 2019

So, I know last week I had another studying post but the truth is I'm in a full-throttle study mode these next few weeks. My exams start in May and I'm sure you guys' exams are around the corner too so studying at this point is kinda crucial for the both of us.

Also, I'll let you in on something real special. This year- you ready for this- I've learnt...absolutely...nothing. Like I know I kind of did but honestly I've been so unproductive since the beginning of the year and I feel like I slept through one class and then all of a sudden the year is over and I'm about to fail the final exam of my high school life. It's crazy. So if you're anything like me, I know you're gonna appreciate these posts too.

Studying at home can be almost as problematic as studying at school. I mean, we often tell ourselves "When I get home I'm gonna be soooo productive." Then we get home and it's like "I never said that. Who said that?" But why?

Personally I think because we have so much time on our hands and there's no real rigid structure anymore like at school. We're forced to be...responsible. *shivers* But, hear me out, it's possible. If we build ourselves a schedule and keep ourselves entertained, studying at home doesn't have to be this dreadfully boring thing anymore. This is How To Study At Home.

Studying with a notebook and pen.

Find Your Technique

I think the best way to study at home effectively is to find whatever method works for you. There's the famous pomodoro method where you essentially work for 25 minutes and then take really short breaks in between. I don't use it but lots of people do so you can feel free to try that. Also, don't be afraid to use a flexible schedule. After all, you're at home so time is yours to manipulate. So, you can study for ten minutes for this subject but for another study for an hour. Personalize your schedule and your surroundings to make studying suit for you.

Personally, I like to start off by watching a study video on YouTube (huge motivators) and then I usually just go ham. I just study for hours at a time and when I break i watch like one episode of a show on Netflix. Strange but, that's kinda what gets me going. Figure out the same for you. Here are some general tips:

  1. Speak Out Loud Instead of Simply Reading.

  2. Teach Yourself What You Just Studied.

  3. Study With A Table/Desk

  4. Draw Diagrams

  5. Study Sitting Up

  6. Create Flashcards or Master-guide sheets

P.S. Do not study in bed! You will fall asleep. Been there. Done that.

Do Not Disturb

Studying around a computer desk.

By far my most effective method, however, is the Do Not Disturb feature on my phone. Wow that feature really fuels by antisocial behaviour. Listen, with this you can literally just set your phone down and it won't even ring or vibrate. Not even for a call. If you're phone is your primary distraction, which you know it is, use this. Another alternative is to turn off your WiFi on your phone. For extra strength you can shut off your phone completely. Or, for those really rough days where you just cannot control yourself plug out your WiFi completely. I can confidently say I've done all of those steps simultaneously, multiple times, and it has proven to help.

Typing this out really makes me realize just how bad my addiction has gotten, but I trsut I'm not alone?

Remember To Eat

Studying with coffee and being productive in bed.

At home, the kitchen is right there and its open and just waiting for you to demolish it. If you're struggling to study at home your brain will literally use anything to get you off of studying. Food, is the primary accomplice. So, do not forget to eat. Always ensure that you're full and have a glass of water next to you. Set breaks where you eat regularly so your body can keep up wit your mind.

Drown Out Distraction

Families are loud. That's a given. But this is why it is increasingly important to always have earphones on deck. In order to drown out their lame jokes and constant yapping get yourself a study playlist on Spotify and listen to music. I recommend classic music or my personal favourite, R&B.

Some other suggestions include listening to background noise with a great app that I use called Tide. Tide is made for completing tasks. It has a timer and different sounds you can listen to like rain, cafe etc. but you can also use the app to sleep or relax as well This isn't sponsored, but I wish it was. But in addition to that you can also listen to podcasts. Recently I've been getting into a few and I find them really thought-provoking and inspiring. Its kind of like the radio, but for Millennials.
