How To Study At School

Updated: Aug 11, 2019

With exams coming up, it's not uncommon to see us students (by us, I mean me) running around like headless chicken trying to get everything done on the syllabus and memorizing everything our brains will allow us to. The stress is on, readers. But whereas studying at home is a little easier because you're in the comfort of your own four walls, studying at school, ironically, can be quite challenging. I know I'm not the only one that finds it difficult to study at school. Many people have told me the exact same thing and I think it's because of the multiple distraction, regular classes and the fact that we're around our friends.

But, at the same time if we reserve all our studying for home, we'll be devastatingly behind. Especially if you're like me and you get home pretty late. So studying at school, despite its difficulties kind of becomes a must, right? That's why in this blog post I'll be dealing with how we can study at school (and actually get stuff done) amidst all the distractions and problems.

Before we get started, don't forget to leave a like by clicking that little heart icon below because it quite literally makes my day and it lets me know what kinds of content you guys are more interested in seeing! Alright, let's get into it! This is: How To Study At School!

Preparation Is Key

So you've decided you want to stop wasting time at school, But what then? Well, it all starts with what you have in your bag. Sure, it's impossible to carry all of our resources to school. We'd probably be strolling around with a supermarket basket on campus. But, when deciding to study at school you need to already plan what you'll be studying on what days so you can pack the extra stuff you'll need. That way you're not studying without a book you forgot at home or a highlighter or something else that you don't recognize how much you need it till it's not there.

Organize your days so that you know exactly what you'll be studying and you can prepare yourself with the right resources. That way, you've already maximized your potential of productivity for that day. It only takes 2 minutes, readers but the benefit is monumental.

Location

Where you study has a lot to do with how much work you'll get done (bathrooms and outdoors don't work, I've tried). You need to pick a place where you know you'll get the most work done. Wherever that is, I recommend that it should probably have a few characteristics:

  1. Peace- This is different from quiet. I know for me, I like to have just a little noise in the background that low intensity and doesn't affect me. Or you can get somewhere completely silent if that's best for you.

  2. Few People- The less, the merrier.

  3. Lots of Light (preferably natural)- it's been proven that studying with a lot of light helps keep you focused and prevents sleep. Do not (and I can't emphasize this enough) study in a dim place! You will fall straight to sleep!

I know I always study in the library but if the library isn't for you it's your job to really find that spot that's just right. Feel free to test out different places as well to see which makes you get the most work done. When you find that place, try to only study there, that way your mind will associate that specific area with studying. Over time, it'll be second nature to study there.

Friends of Foes?

Alright, let's not lie. A huge part of the reason why it's really hard to study at school is because of our friends. They're distraction, personified. They're making jokes, they're telling stories and before you know it the bell has rung and you just wasted an entire hour (even typing this is giving me PTSD flashbacks).

If you're going to attempt the huge feat of studying while at school you'll need to battle those we call our friends. Luckily, you have a few options.

Option #1 Tell Your Friends

Let them know you're going to be using your time to study and you're serious and you need to get work done. If they're really your friends they'll listen and either sit there quietly or leave. You gotta be blunt sometimes.

Option #2 Ditch Your Friends

Pretty straightforward, I think. If your friends are causing you to not study just, hide. Run in the opposite direction. Duck under a table. They'll understand.

Option #3 Make Them Join You

Even if they don't do the same subjects you do, make your friends join in on the studying session and that way, you can all get some work done. Just make sure to keep each other in check.

If none of these work then, wow. Good luck, Charlie!

Time Management

If you're studying in between classes, off the bat you'll know exactly how much time you have. In that case be sure to tackle something equal to how much time you have. After school you can take on the more rigorous topics and subjects. Also, try to weave it into your actual schedule. So, if you have physics next, in your free period study physics (incredible, Matthew wow, how'd you come up with that?), for example. This one is a lot more individualistic so ultimately it's up to you to personalize your study timetable to get work done. Also, feel free to pencil time to get food, if you can study while you eat, and other breaks. After all, all work and no play makes Matthew cry himself to sleep nightly.

..i-is that not how it goes?
